Scientists Say They've Found a Code Beyond Genetics in DNA

«Researchers believe they have found a second code in DNA in addition to the genetic code.
The genetic code specifies all the proteins that a cell makes. The second code, superimposed on the first, sets the placement of the nucleosomes, miniature protein spools around which the DNA is looped. The spools both protect and control access to the DNA itself.

The discovery, if confirmed, could open new insights into the higher order control of the genes, like the critical but still mysterious process by which each type of human cell is allowed to activate the genes it needs but cannot access the genes used by other types of cell.

The new code is described in the current issue of Nature by Eran Segal of the Weizmann Institute in Israel and Jonathan Widom of Northwestern University in Illinois and their colleagues.»

Pork 'n Beans

A sign of Good Financial Times

From the Baton Rouge Business Report:

There's a little less in their wallets:
Capital One Financial Corp. says it earned $552.6 million or $1.78 a share in the second quarter, compared to $531.1 million or $2.03 a share in the second quarter of 2005. Those numbers failed to meet analysts' expectations. Capital One says it collected fewer late fees in the U.S., as more customers paid their credit card bills on time. The credit card giant recently took over Hibernia National Bank.

If people are paying their credit card bills on time (managing their money more effectively), I'd say that is a sign that people are doing better financially.  I'm sure Capital One wasn't so happy to lose $20 million. :)

"Those Win Who Have the Truth..." - Vladimir Putin

Except for the religious plurarlism, it's an interesting note from the former Communist:

"President Vladimir Putin said laws and their application should be based on moral norms like the Bible, the Talmud or the Koran.

“Moral and ethical norms described in the ‘codes of conduct’ – the Bible, the Talmud, the Koran and other holy scriptures – are very important for true believers, they are even more important than the papers we issue, backed up by the force of the state,” Putin said in a conference of European prosecutors in Moscow on Wednesday.

“Why? There has been a clear answer to this question in Russia since ancient times – those win who have the truth, not those who have the force,” the president said.

In his view, if law enforcement agencies “can ensure that the law and its application are based on moral norms, we will achieve the main goal – the support of our citizens.”

An Appeal to Arms and to the God of Hosts!

"If we wish to be free; if we mean to preserve inviolate those
inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending; if we
mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so
long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until
the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained—we must fight! I
repeat it, sir, we must fight! An appeal to arms, and to the God of
hosts, is all that is left us." —Patrick Henry
